It all sounds great… But what is Molchanovs, and what exactly is the Molchanovs Training System?

The Molchanovs Training Systems and the Molchanovs freediving courses were initially developed by Natalia Molchanova, the greatest freediver who ever lived. Unfortunately, this Russian freediving champion passed away in 2015 but is still today the freediving mother of so many top-level freediving athletes.

Then, in 2018, a group of entrepreneurs and some of the best freedivers in the world came together and said the industry needs to change. We are going to do things differently. It needs to be about freediving and our community of ocean enthusiasts.

The Molchanovs Education system is a freediving training system based on open-water or pool courses tied together by the Molchanovs Base Training and Molchanovs Movement. The Molchanovs Movement is a global community of freedivers who can all participate in, for the most part, free training. They get access to workouts of the week. They can achieve freediving milestones and earn badges.

Now, just a few years later, Molchanovs is the fastest-growing freediving agency and freediving community in the world, and as you can see, that makes perfect sense.

The Many Benefits of Doing the Freediving Instructor Cross-Over Remote!

You now know that Molchanovs is an incredible training system and that in 2018, the founders said they wanted to do things differently. But if all the other freediving agencies only run classroom instructor courses, why would you remotely start your Molchanovs Freediving Instructor cross-over?

There are actually quite a few reasons why this is such a great idea.

You don’t have to worry about travel restrictions.
You will have more time to study, and you can study in your own time and pace.
The remote courses are often one-on-one, so there is no need to worry about peer pressure in the classroom.

We teach all recreational freediving courses offered by each of these three agencies and offer all the SSI, AIDA, and Molchanovs Freediving Instructor courses.

Signing up for the AIDA Instructor Course is a great idea. AIDA is a non-profit that prides itself on developing the sports side of freediving through research and organizing freediving competitions. AIDA also supports independent instructors – just like Molchanovs does.

SSI has over 50 years of experience teaching scuba courses – since 1970 and has been teaching freediving since 2008. They have the industry’s largest dealer network of dive centers by far, and all this experience results in the most solid instructor course currently available. Joining an SSI Instructor Course means you’ll be a well-trained dive professional who will be more than ready to work in the dive industry. You become a high-level teacher, instructor, and dive professional with the SSI course. Meanwhile, the Molchanovs Instructor Course is more about fine-tuning students’ techniques and technical freediving.

Traditionally, if you want to start your own center or work as a Freediving Instructor for an established center, SSI will be the better option. Having said that, Molchanovs has been getting a lot of traction. Molchanovs is more pure freediving and has a higher all-around technical level, and the value they offer to dive centers and independent instructors is more than you would get with AIDA.

In the end, you really can’t go wrong with either agency. SSI is very solid. AIDA is a non-profit that is very strong in developing the sport of freediving, and Molchanovs is an excellent alternative for those traveling around to teach and those who have a preference for all-round high level skills.

How Does a Remote Freedive Instructor Cross Over or Upgrade Course Work?

Let’s look at the Molchanovs Instructor Requirements and How this works with remote instructor courses.

Remote possibilities exist for the Wave 2 and Lap 2 instructor courses and the Wave 3 and Lap 3 upgrades. There are different scenarios for both levels of the remote instructor course.

With the fully remote cross-over course, you must record and submit the in-water performance requirements to your instructor trainer. You join the course, follow all the theory and online presentations, and complete the online exams. After completing the theory and online part of the program, you have one year to find a pool and open water location. Here, you and your buddy record the required skills. When you upload the videos to a video-sharing site, you can share them with your instructor trainer, and when all skills are approved, your trainer will certify you via the Molchanovs System.

A partially remote instructor course could happen when, for example, you travel to Panglao. We understand that freediving in the Philippines is pretty incredible, and you want to spend as much time in the water as possible—we get it. 🙂 If this applies to you, you might want to start your instructor course from the comfort of your home.

The base price for the fully and partially remote instructor course or upgrade is the same. When you come to Panglao and finish the course with an Instructor Trainer, you pay $52 per IT session for the evaluation. These sessions are usually longer than the regular coaching sessions, often one-on-one, and often entail, besides the in-water part, also a short classroom evaluation. How many IT sessions you need depends on the preparation, home study, and training the instructor candidate has done before starting the sessions. But because of the efficient one-on-one sessions and the flexible scheduling of the IT sessions, the total cost of the instructor course is usually still quite a bit lower than the regular course price.

Remote Molchanovs Wave 2 Instructor Cross-Over Course

The Molchanovs Wave 2 Instructor can teach Molchanovs Wave 1 and 2, the Lap 1 and 2 courses, Theory 1 and 2, and the Discover Freediving program and guide the Base Training Level 1 to 4 programs.

Prerequisites: The candidate must be a freediving instructor with another agency with a similar level and have a First Aid Certificate (no older than two years).

Duration: 3 or 4 days

Performance & Course Completion Requirements:

Constant Weight Bi Fins (CWTB): 40mtr. (dive time 80-90s)
Free Immersion (FIM): 40mtr.
Constant No Fins (CNF): 30mtr.
Dynamic Bi Fins (DYNB): 100mtr.
Dynamic No Fins (DNF): 60mtr.

Static Breath-Hold: 4:00min.
Standby Rescue (1min. Rescue Hang): 15mtr.
BO Rescue (50mtr. tow incl. Rescue Breaths): 25mtr.
CO2 Dive: 60sec. then 20m CWT dive

* All skills need to be demonstrated at an instructor-level quality.

Please note that before starting the Molchanovs FITC, you will have to pay an additional $100 for the Molchanovs professional registration - we will put this on your invoice since we need to pay this to Molchanovs before the course starts. Then, once we certify you as a Molchanovs Wave 2 or Lap 2 Instructor, to become an active instructor, you must pay Molchanovs the first-year annual fee directly, which will also be $100 annually.

Remote Molchanovs Wave 3 Instructor Upgrade or Cross-Over Course

The Wave 3 Instructor can teach Wave 3 Courses, Teach Lap 3 Course, Guide Base 1-4 Levels, and Assist in a Wave 2 Instructor Course. Apply for the Instructor Trainer Course (ITC) after one year of active status and a minimum of certifications.

Prerequisites: The candidate must be an active Wave 2 Instructor or show proof of Master Instructor Certification from another agency. Have at least one year of teaching experience as a Wave 2 Instructor (or equivalent in other agencies) with a minimum of 50 Certifications (min. 10 Wave 2). Certifications from other agencies account for 50% (e.g., 60 certifications from another agency are worth 30 Wave certifications), and the record of leading min. 20 Base Sessions

Duration: 2 - 3 days

Performance & Course Completion Requirements:

Constant Weight Bi Fins (CWTB): 50mtr. (dive time 100-110s)
Constant No Fins (CNF): 35mtr.
Dynamic Bi Fins (DYNB): 110mtr.
Dynamic No Fins (DNF): 75mtr.

Static Breath-Hold: 4:00min.
Standby Rescue (1min. Rescue Hang): 20mtr.
BO Rescue (50mtr. tow incl. Rescue Breaths): 30mtr.
CO2 Dive: 60sec. then 25m CWT dive

Price per person for the W3I remote cross-over: $700

Please note that for those upgrading from the Wave 2 instructor level, you'd have to pay an additional $50 for registration. Instructors crossing over to Molchanovs have to pay the $50 registration fees, and to become active instructors, they must pay the first-year annual fee directly to Molchanovs. The yearly fee for an Independent Instructor is currently set at $100 a year.
